The Importance of Linking for SEO

The Importance of Links and Linking for SEO

We hear about using linking strategies to improve search engine optimization (SEO). But what’s the importance? What is linking anyway? Search engines are in the business of providing the most relevant sites to people searching for information. They use linking as one of the tools to judge which sites are more relevant or important for that particular information.

Using Linking Strategies for your sites SEO is very important. Linking is when one site puts the URL of another site in their content. For example, you write in your blog about a blog you read and you put that blogs URL in your content, allowing a way for your readers to click on that URL and quickly pull up the other site.

The importance comes when search engines review your site, they see your site as more relevant when it links to other sites and also when other sites link to you. For example, if CNN has an article which 1000’s of other sites link to, the Google sees CNN as more important, because 1000’s of other site owners deem them important enough to link to.

When you link to another site you are showing search engines that you think it is important, or relevant enough to link to. You are also raising your own relevance in the search engines because they see you are connecting beyond your own site. There are three main types of Linking which you should be concerned with. They all play a part in increasing your SEO and page ranking.

Three Types of Links.

1. Outbound Links

Outbound links are links you put in your content that point out to other sites. You might write a post about, so you link to their site. As I mentioned earlier, this type of link will help your page ranking and SEO, so they should be used. They raise the relevance of your site some. Use Outbound links when ever they are relevant and appropriate in your content.

2. Inbound Links

Inbound links, also know as Backlinks, are links that other sites have which point to your site. These are more important in SEO because they show search engines that other sites see your site as important. They are also harder to obtain because you have to get other site owners to see your content as worthy of being linked to. They are harder to obtain, but worth the efforts.

One means of obtaining more backlinks is to comment on other sites posts. The more you comment on other blogs, the more you build connections with other sites and the better you become know among other writers. Thus, the more likely you’ll have others link to your site. There other strategies, but this is a good one to start with.

3. Internal Links

Internal Links are when you link from one page or post on your site to other pages or posts on your site. These are also good in that each link in and out of a page or post adds a little relevance to that page.

So it is good to link from one page or post to another.Having a Site Map or Category page with links to all your pages or posts is a good start. Also, as you write posts, offer a list of posts at the bottom which your reader might also want to read. In this way you are constantly linking each post to several other posts.

4. Anchor Text Links

Anchor Text Links can apply to all of the other 3 types. Anchor Text Links are when words within your content are linked to other pages, posts or sites. For example, you might use a key word of MLM Traing and link it to an external site which provides MLM Training. This can be a powerful way to sprinkle links into your content in a natural, unobtrusive way.

Anchor Text Links can be used in your posts to link to other internal posts; in your posts to link to external sites; and in external sites to create backlinks to your site. Another form or Anchor Links is when a picture is linked to another site, etc.

As you see there are several types of links, all of which are important in your linking strategy in helping to improve your page ranking in search engines. Your linking strategy can be a big part of your SEO which helps to bring relevant visitors to your site.

Your linking strategy can ultimately be a major part of your online marketing success.

Here’s to your linking success!
