8 Keys to Maximize Your Productivity

Most of us have days when we look back and wonder where the day went. We ask ourselves why didn’t we get the things done we had planned. We knew what needed done when the day started but somehow at the end of the day much of it didn’t get done.

How do we maximize our productivity each day to accomplish the tasks we set for ourselves? We know that in order to be successful we have to make good use of our time and accomplish the critical activities that are needed for success. Below are eight simple keys to maximize your productivity and help achieve the goals you set for yourself.

1. Prioritize your tasks and focus on the important things.

You can never accomplish in a single day all the things you know need done to succeed in your field. Success is a process. You move forward each day as you accomplish some of the things you set for yourself. As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” So too, success can’t be built in a day.

So prioritize your list of things that need done. Write out what is most important to accomplish today and do those most important things first. If the less important things don’t get done you will still have accomplished the critical things. By achieving the most important tasks each day it will give you a sense of accomplishment and propel you forward with more energy to accomplish even more each day. Prioritize your tasks and focus on the important things first!

2. Get Started Early.

Get up early and get going on your day’s important tasks right away. Benjamin Franklin is said to have coined the phrase, “Early to bed, early to rise; makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” That phrase is still just as applicable to today in our lives. Go to bed at a reasonable time and get up early. Most people are more productive in the mornings. There are exceptions and you must judge that yourself. The key is use your most productive time for getting the critical things done. Don’t flutter away the time on none essential distractions. Minimize the distractions. Get started early.

 

3. Focus!

Distractions are so plentiful in today’s world. Phones, TV, music, email, etc. You have to FOCUS your attention on what needs done at the time and get it done. Multi-tasking has it’s place in our world, but don’t neglect focus. By putting your total attention on the one critical task you can knock it out and get on to the next task. In the end you will get more done and with better quality. Focus!

 

4. Close Your Door.

Have we mentioned distractions yet? Distractions are so often the great killer of productivity. Close your door or otherwise separate yourself from outside distractions. When working from home this can be difficult at times. Find a way to block yourself off from distractions, at least for part of the time when you can truly focus and accomplish what needs done.

It’s easy when working from home to give yourself a guilt trip about “ignoring” your family. Your family needs to understand that for you to succeed and benefit them in the long run, they need to give you time to focus. It’s to everyone’s mutual benefit. Of course have balance in this. But you need to have time blocked away from distractions. Close your door.

 

5. Take a Break.

This may seem contradictory at first, but we all need to clear our mind and rest from intense work at times. Working non-stop all day and all week may give you the since of accomplishment, but in order to perform at our peak we need to step back and rest occasionally. During the day take breaks to give your brain and your body needed rest and rejuvenation. Be careful to not let the break become the rest of the day. But by taking a break, your time focusing on your critical tasks will be more productive. Take a day of rest and rejuvenation each week to recharge your batteries for the next week. Work hard with focus, but occasionally…. Take a break.

 

6. Organize Related Tasks Together.

You want to focus on the critical tasks to get them done well and quickly if possible, but some tasks are well suited to be grouped into one time slot. For example set a time slot to respond to emails or phone calls or schedule tweets, etc. If you respond to emails throughout the day, you risk getting distracted from the important tasks you are supposed to be focused on. By setting a time for such tasks you avoid the distraction of responding to them during your focused critical tasks. Organize Related Tasks Together.

 

7. Delegate and Automate When Possible.

If you’re building your own business, especially a home business, you often have to wear many hats, so to speak. You are the writer, the proofreader, the web designer, etc, etc, etc. Managing so many things can become daunting. Whenever possible, delegate to others. Hire out items others could do just as well which would free more of your time to do the critical tasks which are best done by you. Use automation so certain tasks can be done while you are working on other tasks or even while you’re sleeping.

There are great tools available for automating tasks on Twitter, Facebook, etc. Delegate and Automate when possible.

8. Take Care of Your Body!

Your body is a delegate machine. It’s an amazing machine! But if you don’t take care of it, it will quit on you. Get regular exercise! Eat balanced meals! There is so much information available on how to have good health and take care of ourselves. Use that information in a balanced way.

If you are to be a success in business or in any area of your life you have to take good care of your body and your mind. A sickly, tired body will not help you focus on the critical tasks at hand. A sluggish mind will not help you resist the urge to follow after distractions throughout the day. A strong, healthy body and a clear, alert mind are super critical to your success in business and life. Take Good Care of Your Body!

Are you wasting your time away?

Internet Marketers can often face a serious problem, especially when using social media. It’s easy to get distracted and waste your time, rather than accomplish the steps that will get you where you want to be; Time Freedom, Financial Success, a Successful Home Business Owner.

Your time is Precious! If you waste it away doing not productive time fillers, you will not make it to the success you are looking for. It’s too easy to spend time searching for new tools or constantly learning new marketing methods. Don’t get me wrong, you need to be searching for better ways to market online and you need to be educating yourself.

The key is to not make learning new things the only thing you do. If you are going to build a successful internet marketing business, you have to be doing the action steps that will grow your business online. There has to be a balance.

Here is a list of common time wasters that Internet Marketing Business owners can face and that you need to avoid.

1. Spending too much time socializing in trivial things.

Yes, Social Media can be a great tool in building relationships and you internet business. Relationships are a huge key in building a social networking business or MLM. But again there needs to be balance. Don’t JUST socialize on trivial things. Shooting the bull and talking about the puppies is fine in balance.

Decide what the main steps you need to be taking to accomplish your goals and spend most of your online time doing those tasks. Probably at least 80% of your “business” time should be working on those critical tasks.

2. Getting too involved in the techie stuff.

When you’re working with the technologies that internet marketers work with, it’s easy for some people to get bogged down in the technology, rather than accomplishing the step needed for success.

If you’re newer at working with computers, you may be spending a lot of time just learning how to use these technologies. You might consider outsourcing tasks that require a large learning curve for you. It might be more profitable in the long run to have web designer put up your blog (if that’s what you’ll be using) rather than take the time to learn how to do it yourself.

Or on the other extreme, if you’re like me and love techie stuff, its’ easy to spend time learning all the new techie tricks and techniques, rather than sitting down and actually writing the blog post you should be writing (Like right now when I’m writing this post, when I’d love to be tweaking my Linux operating system!)

You have to decide what is the important activities and not let other trivial interests distract you.

3. Watching Too Much TV!

Perhaps the biggest distraction and time waster for many people is the Television Set! Americans on average watch 25-50 hours of TV per week! And watching videos online becoming more the trend, those numbers go even higher. Even if we don’t spend 50 hours a week watching TV or videos, or playing games, etc.; Are we wasting too much precious time that would better be used building your business.

These are just some of the time wasters you might face as you work to grow your successful home business. What ever it is that easily distracts you from your tasks, work to reduce the distraction. Check out my post Getting Things Done! for other tips on Time Management.
