Your Success is determined by Your Desire

Have you struggled to reach the success you’ve wanted? Have you wondered why others seem to be able to reach their success when you can’t seem to reach yours? Have you wondered if something’s wrong with you?

Some people feel that those who do become successful must have an advantage that they don’t have. Perhaps the successful have more access to money. Or they have more talents and skills. But is that really the reason some succeed and others don’t?

No; typically those who do succeed are not somehow more wealthy or gifted or skilled than those who don’t succeed. If you have not succeeded, it’s probably not because you don’t have the abilities to succeed. You have what it takes to succeed.

The issue is typically not the lack of abilities; the issue more often, is lack of desire. One must have the desire to reach their potential in order to reach their potential: in order to reach the success they are wanting.

As John Maxwell so aptly put it: “Successful and unsuccessful people do not vary greatly in their abilities. They vary in their desires to reach their potential.”

With a strong enough desire to reach success, one will find a way to learn the skills and develop the abilities needed to get there. As some have put it: one must have a “big enough why.” Of course, along with the big enough why or desire, one must put forth the effort to learn whatever it takes to succeed.

When someone has a strong enough desire to reach success, they will keep working at it UNTIL they achieve the success they are reaching for. They will read the success books UNTIL they grow in skills and traits of success. They will listen to self-development trainings UNTIL they improve themselves. They will not give up UNTIL they succeed.

The differences between successful people and unsuccessful people is not in their abilities, but in their desires.

The starting point of all achievement is desire

Many success coaches emphasize that a major key to success is to have a great desire to succeed. As Napoleon Hill put it, “the starting point of all achievement is desire.”

Achieving success in whatever area one is working toward requires work. Often a lot of work! It requires time, often much time. Without a strong desire to keep one motivated and focused, a person will soon lose interest and drift back into the old habits that put them where they were before.

Napoleon Hill is famous for also saying “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” A person must conceive or the achievement or goal. He then must believe that he can achieve it. In other words he must desire it and have faith that he can achieve it. It takes desire as an integral part of the belief.

Many other success coaches tell us that we must have a clear vision or dream that we keep in strong focus. This is all a part of the desire to achieve. We must have a clear vision, a clear dream of what we want to achieve and work it into a strong desire to achieve it. We need to set goals to achieve those dreams. Jim Rohn said that goals are like magnets, pulling you through the hard times to your dream. We need clear, big dreams to have to strong pull needed to keep us going even when we want to give up.

Others use the term “reason” for vision or dream. Some say that you need to have a big enough reason to motivate you to achieve success. Having a big enough reason gives you the desire needed to endure the time and work needed to reach your goals. This is all a part of the desire Napoleon Hill is talking about which is the starting point for all achievement.

So if you are serious about succeeding then, work on your desire! Work on your why; your reason. Have a clear, vision or dream to focus on.

Remember, you need a strong desire or dream to pull you along to achieve your success.
